Science Finals Guide

Interview with Dr. Shamieh, Honors Biology Teacher.

Purpose of a science final: In science in general, a lot of the base stuff is important. Repetition and laying a strong foundation for this basic material is crucial. A final forces students to go back and master the basic material and firm up having that foundation. When students have to study more complicated and nuanced material, they will have a really strong foundation, which is what teachers need in order for you to take the next step.

Advice for a science final: First off, start early. Being smart is not enough for such a large exam, especially with the amount of exams you will be taking that week, which is really heavy. You want to make sure that you’re well rested and sleep during that week. Coming in with sleep deprivation puts you at a succinct disadvantage, so plan to start now. Do a little bit each day. A lot in one sitting is counterproductive, it’s just a waste of time. Whenever you are reading through material or looking over notes, have a pen and paper and take notes. Our human brains are notorious for taking a vacation while we’re studying. Taking notes while studying keeps your brain engaged and even creates neural connections in your brain that will help you register the material stronger.
