Clark Vowels, Executive Director, JCTV
Clark Vowels is a Senior at Jesuit High School and reports for the Jesuit Chronicle. He has been pursuing videography and filmmaking for 6 years. When he was in 6th grade he took a media studies course where he learned the fundamentals of videography and video editing. This sparked a passion for video and he has continued to build his skills by becoming proficient in a plethora of film and photo editing software. Recently, he has taken on the role of Executive Director of JCTV, where he helps produce varsity sports broadcasts for Jesuit. Outside of school, you will usually find Clark camping, mountain biking, skiing, and surfing in the beautiful pacific northwest. This year he is particularly interested in broadening Jesuit Media’s video journalism, offering more ways to access stories from our team of writers. Clark also has played Football for Jesuit through his Junior year, played guitar in the Jazz band for all 4 years of high school, and continues to participate in Tech Theatre for every drama production. Clark hopes to build a solid resume of videos to help him pursue his dream career of becoming a videographer for Red Bull marketing.
Skylar Bordonaro, Staff Writer
Skylar Bordonaro is the youngest child coming from a family of five. From being the youngest child, Skylar learned a thing or two about patience and hard work to prove herself. She also learned how to blaze her own trail and follow what she loves. This is what drew her to journalism. Wanting to do her own thing led her to journalism and writing. She loves the art of expressing herself through writings. In her writings, Skylar explores topics that have a sense of humor such as the debate of cinnamon roles at Jesuit or if your horoscope is really comparable with others. Skylar also touches on subjects that can help the world and community, such as doing a mental health column. Outside of school, she enjoys hiking, drinking matcha at The Coffee Shop, yoga, and reading. She does activities that include a mix of being an introvert and extrovert. Lastly, Skylar has a huge love and passion for animals.
Justin Bian, Sports Executive & Editorial Board Member
Justin Bian is a senior at Jesuit High School and the Sports Executive for the Jesuit Chronicle. He has played soccer for eleven years, and piano for ten. Along with those hobbies, he likes to visit new places around Portland with his family on the weekends. Justin got interested in Journalism because of his older sister, Andrea, who was a staff writer a few years ago. Although his older sister’s experience was a great motivator, the main reason he decided to join Journalism was because of his passion for sports. This year, he hopes to cover a variety of sports and write short stories about the games. He also looks to interview players, coaches, and fans, so that the Jesuit community can get insights on the sports teams. Justin would also like to pursue other forms of media, such as broadcasting and podcasts. He aims to bring relevant news around the Jesuit community based on current events on and off campus. At the end of the year, he hopes to have published many articles and have created lasting relationships with classmates and teachers.
Matias Crespo, Director of Videography
Matias Crespo, who is half Ecuadorian, is a senior who has a passion for videography and Journalism. Matias is especially interested in working on documentaries that highlight different events and moments at Jesuit High School. He enjoys writing articles on sports and new teachers in the community. A student who is hoping to pursue this form of videography in college, brings a unique form of dedication and energy to the classroom to continue to get better and help others. His hobbies include filmmaking and Cross Country which is another activity that he is involved with at Jesuit. This is Matias’s second year running in the Advanced class, and is hoping to fill the role of a leader and produce new forms of media.
Charlie Riddle, Staff Writer
Charlie Riddle is a senior at Jesuit and this is his first second year in media. Charlie’s favorite thing to do in the media is make podcasts. Charlie has two sisters. One of his sisters, Abby, graduated from Jesuit in 2020 and goes to TCU and his other sister Kate is a sophomore at Jesuit. Charlie also has two dogs named Lulu and Archie. Charlie is involved in the lacrosse program at Jesuit. Charlie’s favorite thing he wants to write about this year is sports and movies. His favorite sports teams are the Oregon Ducks, Trail Blazers and the Chargers. Some of Charlie’s favorite hobbies are traveling, playing sports, and hanging with friends. Charlie’s favorite sport is golf. The coolest place he has been to is Mexico. When Charlie is not in school and has some free time he also likes to play golf and hang out with his friends. Charlie is not the best golfer but he still enjoys playing. Charlie also enjoys watching movies. Charlie hopes to write a couple articles this year about some of his favorite movies.
Kasey Engel, Associate Video and Broadcast Director
Sarcastic, dramatic and determined, Kasey Engel is heavily involved in Jesuit’s Media program, and plans to make it her career in the future. She is a veteran of both the Broadcast Journalism and the Advanced Media program, and she is often the person you see behind the camera every Friday night at the football games. As a current Senior at Jesuit High School, she enjoys bringing different topics and people to the spotlight through video media. Her favorite Broadcasting memory she made was when she was conducting an interview with our sideline reporter and 4 Jesuit students dressed as bananas at our Homecoming football game. From a young age, Kasey knew she had an interest in Broadcast Journalism, spending days on end making music videos with her friends, and making a DIY news station in her room. Using her experience both behind and in front of the camera, she hopes to bring forward student’s voices in a positive light. In addition to filming and editing, she enjoys volleyball, baking, and hanging out with her friends.
Caitlin Thomas, Staff Writer & Photography Editor
Curious, driven, and open-minded, Caitlin Thomas is an active member of the Jesuit community. She is involved in student government, women in sports club, and the ambassador program. Caitlin developed her interest in media taking photography class her junior year. She enjoys unique projects like fashion photography, senior photos, and focusing on capturing a subject’s personality in her pictures. You’ll find her with her camera at many Jesuit events capturing the unique, diverse community. Thrust into the spotlight, Caitlin interviewed 4 Jesuit students dressed as bananas at the Homecoming Football game while filling in for a sideline announcer at the last minute. This chance interaction launched her excitement in discovering passions in journalism and JCTV. She plans on reporting current events and Jesuit student interests. Caitlin loves being involved at Jesuit and in the greater Portland community, volunteering at Blanchet House and co-founding the non-profit Handle With Care PDX. Outside of school, she enjoys reading, working out, and traveling. She also enjoys exploring Portland’s thrift stores and vegetarian restaurants.
Gus Clevenger, Staff Writer
The power of storytelling is used to inspire and make people think more deeply and thoughtfully about what was presented to them. To Gus Clevenger, a senior at Jesuit high school,
storytelling is at the forefront of his life, through seeking out new adventures and finding creative ways to describe the world around him. As a young kid, Gus was surrounded with art and
writing and never saw himself doing much of anything else. Through listening to his dad make up crazy stories about made up characters, to walking around OHSU and sitting through
interviews of dental students with his mom, storytelling was always there. This will be Gus’s second year as an editor and writer for the Jesuit Chronicle. In his first year as a Journalism
Student, he learned the fundamentals of Indesign as well as explored topics ranging from the Jesuit administrative policies to food writing. Gus enjoys writing opinions , sharing different
perspectives, and connecting people through stories. He hopes to continue discovering what he loves to write about as well as continue to put passion into his work to connect the Jesuit
community through stories and discussion. In his free time, Gus enjoys running, cooking, drawing, going on long walks, and being with family.
