About the Writers
Clark Vowels, Executive Director, JCTV
Clark Vowels is a Senior at Jesuit High School and reports for the Jesuit Chronicle. He has been pursuing videography and filmmaking for 6 years. When he was in 6th grade he took a media studies course where he learned the fundamentals of videography and video editing. This sparked a passion for video and he has continued to build his skills by becoming proficient in a plethora of film and photo editing software. Recently, he has taken on the role of Executive Director of JCTV, where he helps produce varsity sports broadcasts for Jesuit. Outside of school, you will usually find Clark camping, mountain biking, skiing, and surfing in the beautiful pacific northwest. This year he is particularly interested in broadening Jesuit Media’s video journalism, offering more ways to access stories from our team of writers. Clark also has played Football for Jesuit through his Junior year, played guitar in the Jazz band for all 4 years of high school, and continues to participate in Tech Theatre for every drama production. Clark hopes to build a solid resume of videos to help him pursue his dream career of becoming a videographer for Red Bull marketing.
Kasey Engel, Associate Video and Broadcast Director
Sarcastic, dramatic and determined, Kasey Engel is heavily involved in Jesuit’s Media program, and plans to make it her career in the future. She is a veteran of both the Broadcast Journalism and the Advanced Media program, and she is often the person you see behind the camera every Friday night at the football games. As a current Senior at Jesuit High School, she enjoys bringing different topics and people to the spotlight through video media. Her favorite Broadcasting memory she made was when she was conducting an interview with our sideline reporter and 4 Jesuit students dressed as bananas at our Homecoming football game. From a young age, Kasey knew she had an interest in Broadcast Journalism, spending days on end making music videos with her friends, and making a DIY news station in her room. Using her experience both behind and in front of the camera, she hopes to bring forward student’s voices in a positive light. In addition to filming and editing, she enjoys volleyball, baking, and hanging out with her friends.
Lauren Herrick, Editor in Chief
Senior Lauren Herrick is a returning student from Journalism and a member of the editorial board this year. Lauren enjoys producing feature and opinion pieces, collaborating with the team to lead the development of the online and print paper, and enhancing her passion for the craft of journalism through incorporating technology such as podcasts— check out the Sader Scoop, which she co-founded and edits. When she’s not writing, you can find her reading the Wall Street Journal or listening to NYT’s The Daily. Outside of journalism, Lauren enjoys practicing yoga, part-time baristing at a local cafe, spending time exploring Oregon with her friends, and listening to a lot of country music. She’s excited to help lead the Jesuit media program and explore topics more in depth during her second year of the program.
Justin Bian, Sports Executive & Editorial Board Member
Justin Bian is a senior at Jesuit High School and the Sports Executive for the Jesuit Chronicle. He has played soccer for eleven years, and piano for ten. Along with those hobbies, he likes to visit new places around Portland with his family on the weekends. Justin got interested in Journalism because of his older sister, Andrea, who was a staff writer a few years ago. Although his older sister’s experience was a great motivator, the main reason he decided to join Journalism was because of his passion for sports. This year, he hopes to cover a variety of sports and write short stories about the games. He also looks to interview players, coaches, and fans, so that the Jesuit community can get insights on the sports teams. Justin would also like to pursue other forms of media, such as broadcasting and podcasts. He aims to bring relevant news around the Jesuit community based on current events on and off campus. At the end of the year, he hopes to have published many articles and have created lasting relationships with classmates and teachers.
