On Thursday October 9, Jesuit women’s soccer faced off against Metro rival Sunset. After a hard fought game, Jesuit came away with a 2-1 win. Although having many chances, including one off the crossbar by senior Abby Cox, Jesuit went into halftime scoreless.
Most of the game was played in the middle of the park with Sunset only having one clean look on goal, saved by Zoe Anderson, in the first half.
Coming out of half time Sunset struck first with a goal far post by senior Ellie Felt.
However, Jesuit did not back down.
“We responded with grit and never gave up. We all talked to each other during one of the breaks to regroup and calm each other down and remind everyone calm is contagious,” senior Abby Cox stated.
Pushing three forwards up top to try and generate momentum towards goal, they were quickly able to strike back with a header off a corner by Claudia Rose.
Jesuit did not stop there, with less than ten mins left Jesuit’s bench started chants of “Abby Time” to invoke their captain.
Making good on these chants, Abby Cox scored a world class header off a cross by Riley Weaks to secure the win for Jesuit.
The Jesuit women’s soccer team is currently undefeated and ranked number one in the nation. They will end their season against two tough opponents, Mountainside and Beaverton, before heading into playoffs to make a run for a back to back state title. The team is looking very promising this year with five mercy rules including three during league play.
“We are a very connected team who works hard for each other and has fun,” Cox explained.
