The West Linn Lions held off the number one ranked Jesuit Crusaders this past Saturday at Cronin field in the quarter finals winning the game in penalty kicks.
The Jesuit Women’s soccer team had high hopes of winning back to back state championships but fell short to a hungry West Linn Lions team who parked the bus in their defensive half with 5 defenders once the vision of going to overtime occurred to them.
Lions junior keeper and Northwestern commit Nyamma Nelson had several astonishing saves that kept the Lions team breathing and the score 0-0.
Jesuit possessed the ball nearly the whole game and ultimately dominated the midfield but were unable to finish their chances in the final third of the field which led to a nerve-racking overtime.
Again, the Crusaders dominated the ball in both halves of overtime and were able to win several corner kicks but were still unable to finish their chances at the net against the strong Lions defense. The Lions had no opportunities in overtime as they decided to play extremely defensive in order to force the game into penalty kicks.
During penalty kicks, the Jesuit Crusaders missed three out of their four taken with two saves from Nyamma Nelson. On the other hand, the Lions were able to convert three of their four attempts leading to a much unexpected upset against the defending state champions.
