In our ongoing series about the impact of AI at Jesuit High School, Jesuit Media writers are focusing on the many ways it affects a Jesuit education.
On March 13th, 2024, sophomore Jackson Park spoke about the impact of artificial intelligence in college admissions as part of Jesuit’s Social Justice Week.
To kick off his presentation, Park demonstrated the portrayal of AI in the media with a short clip of The Matrix, a movie in which humans are controlled by AI as power sources. Students then learned how to map out the college admissions process by separating it into three parts: fall, winter, and spring.
As he outlined each part of the process, Park demonstrated the different ways AI can help, whether that be editing an essay, helping find the right college, or generating a calendar.
“I never realized how helpful AI can be to expedite the admissions process. I plan on using it to help find the college that’s the right fit for me,” junior Sam Nordean said.
Applicants aren’t the only people who use AI in the admissions process.
“50% of admissions officers utilize AI to accelerate the process. That number is expected to rise to 80% in the next year,” Park said.
Junior Brady Bayne expressed his concern over AI being used to evaluate applications.
“I think it makes sense to use AI to speed up the process, but unlike admissions officers, AI cannot sense emotions or the ‘human’ aspect of an application,” Bayne said.
