The Jesuit Science team for the first time in school history won the Oregon Science Olympiad state competition. The March 16th event is a team-based science and engineering competition held annually at University of Portland.
For the past 17 years, Saint Mary’s Academy and Westview have held the state title, until now.
The competition consists of 15 teams and 23 different events over the course of the day. The events varied from cell biology, to astronomy, to experimental design. The students engineer and design to fit the different challenges and compete against other schools in the state. They compete in pairs or teams and work in different labs, outdoor spaces, and classrooms. As the website described it, “a track meet for science.”
Mr. Feebeck, Jesuit science teacher, was the club monitor. He assisted the team in chemistry events specifically but with other engineering related projects as well.
“This victory could not have been possible without the mentorship and assistance from Mr. Feebeck, our club moderator,” senior Surya Panyam wrote in an email.
The team, also known as the “Feebeck Fifteen,” competed against 15 other teams across the state to win the tournament title. In May, they will further their efforts in the national competition at Michigan State University where they will compete in the Science Olympiad winners from across the country.
