Ken Potter Breaks Oregon Football Record in Exciting Victory
In an exciting night, Ken Potter, the head coach of Jesuit High School, has achieved a huge accomplishment by becoming the state’s all-time winningest football coach, passing Dayton’s Dewey Sullivan (352). After nearly 40 years of dedication and passion for the game, Potter’s victory not only solidifies his reputation, but also acknowledges a football style that has been used by many players and coaches.
This record-breaking win, secured under the lights of Jesuit’s Cronin Field, brings Potter’s career total to an impressive 353 victories. With every touchdown, tackle, and strategy, Potter has shown what smash-mouth football is all about—a style known for its gritty, dedicated run game and a grind to dominating the line of scrimmage.
“I feel excited, elated, relieved, all kinds of different feelings, but the emotion is that I’m very proud of all the players and the assistant coaches I had and all the people that made this possible,” said Potter, when asked how he felt about breaking the record.
Later, Potter mentions “It’s not so much about me, it’s about the community and all the players I got to coach over all these years.”
Potter’s coaching career, resilient and strategic, are characteristics of his smash-mouth football approach that prioritizes a powerful running game and punishing defense. His coaching has not only defined Jesuit High School’s football program, but also set a new standard for high school football across the state.
His trusted coaching staff has played a crucial role in this journey. Offensive Coordinator Mr. John Andreas, known for his “franchise” offensive line, is in his 22nd year with Potter and has been a key role in strengthening the team’s attack. Meanwhile, Mr. Gene Potter, Ken’s brother and a major part of the coaching staff, has offered valuable support and expertise, both on and off the field. Defensive Line coach Mr. Jason Cammann has formed an intimidating defensive squad, contributing significantly to the team’s overall success.
“There’s something to be said about staying consistent, and continuing to hold the standards that he’s been able to hold over the course of the last 30 plus years he’s been coaching” said Coach Andreas. When asked what one of Potter biggest strengths were, Andreas answered “I think, besides from the successes and the state championships, it’s the development of young men, and being consistent with the mission of Jesuit highschool”
Potter’s legacy goes beyond the statistics. His approach to football, characterized with discipline, toughness, and an understanding of the game, has not only earned him respect but has also promoted a culture of excellence and perseverance at Jesuit High School. Former players and colleagues describe him as a mentor who has shaped their lives as much as their athletic careers.
Jesuit High School’s athletic director, Colin Griffin, spoke for many when he said, “Coach Potter has always been a mentor for us…someone we can count on. He understands the tradition of what Jesuit is about. Whatever he is doing, he always has the mission of Jesuit, spirituality of Jesuit, and common goal of Jesuit at heart”
As the celebrations continue and the Jesuit community celebrates their historic coach, the impact and legacy of Coach Potter’s career will, without a doubt, be remembered for generations to come. His record is not just a number but a symbol of perseverance, dedication, and the lasting spirit of high school football.
In the history books of Oregon football, Ken Potter’s name will forever be connected to his excellence and dedication to improve, on and off the field.
