It’s not just about cheese.
The Cheese Society focuses on cultures by providing information about different cheese types in hopes that it can connect to the Jesuit community together through something that they
Jesuit’s 2024 club fair was on Tuesday September 17, which brought back some recurring clubs like fashion club, robotics club, and rocketry club.
This year’s club fair also brought in an abundance of new clubs. Although, one stood out more than others and that was Cheese Society.
The Jesuit Cheese Society is a brand new club that focuses on appreciating various cheeses while learning about their general background getting more than 100 people to sign up.
But how did it come about?
“Well, you know, I was eating some cheese up in Spokane, and I just really thought that Jesuits could use, like a cheese appreciation society,” said the founder of the Cheese Society, Eli Hanson ‘26.
“So I think that the Cheese Society at Jesuit, I think it really brings like very different things that we haven’t had before. Because obviously, you can create whatever club you want, but I think people have mainly been using that to create, you know, clubs surrounding issues that they find. But I think this is just a club to have a lot of fun in and just to really enjoy something that a lot of people like to appreciate you,” said Sam Kaempf ‘26, who went with Eli Hanson to the Tillamook Cheese Factory to get cheeses for their first meeting.
When Ms. Schick and Mrs. O’Mahony first heard about the Cheese Society, they were both very optimistic about what it could bring to Jesuit as such a unique club.
”I’m really excited about the cheese society because to me, it’s one of the few clubs on campus that has a focus on culinary appreciation, and I think there’s a great opportunity for community and fellowship when you gather around food and enjoy food and appreciate the craftsmanship that went into making it awesome.” she said.
”Well, when I heard about the cheese club, really, I was just frustrated that I wasn’t asked to be the moderator, because I feel like I’ve devoted much of my lifetime to preparing myself by eating cheese almost daily. But in all honesty, I think it’s a great way to explore different cultures and life experiences through the medium of food. It’s such an interesting way to see the differences and similarities between our life experiences and backgrounds through food culture,” said Mrs. O’Mahony.
