This year was full of gold for Jesuit’s fall sports, winning 4 state championships out of the 6 sports.
Women’s soccer had a successful season this year, having a record of 19-1. Winning 19 games and losing only 1, to Grant. Their lead scorers this season being sophomore, Natalie Webber, and junior Marien Dunne.
They were victorious in their state championship game, against Grant, with a score of 2-1 by the end of the game, with goals from Natalie Webber and Ana Kubiaczyk.
Men’s soccer had a great season, as well, with 16 wins, 2 losses, and 1 tie. Losing their 2 games to Summit and Lakeridge. Their lead scorers being senior Diego Nieves and sophomore transfer, Vala Saghafi.
”Before the free kick, I started to feel the pressure of scoring the goal. I took a few deep breaths and remembered the hours of practice I put into that shot. When the ref blew the whistle, indicating me to take the shot, I knew exactly what to do to curve it over the defender’s right shoulder. When I saw the ball hit the back of the net, I felt an immense amount of relief, as I felt I had to make that shot, not just for me but for my school.” Saghafi said
They won gold in a difficult game against Mcminneville. Jesuit was down with a score of 0-2 at half time. Jesuit came back and scored twice in the second half, from Dom Bolouri and Vala Saghafi. Leading the game into overtime. Jesuit came back and took the gold.
Volleyball’s season was full of wins with a record of 29-2. Winning all of their games in Oregon and losing 2 in Arizona. Senior Addy Azavedo won player of the year in Metro League.
“A key factor to why we were so successful this season was how together we were. Yes, talent wins you games, but when you face adversity, to be able to turn to your teammates was something we were able to do. We created a sisterhood, one in which made us unstoppable when it came to playoffs.” Azavedo said
Volleyball beat Oregon City for the second time in a row in the state championship this year. Last year, Jesuit reverse swept Oregon City from being down 2 sets and coming back to win 3-2. However this year Jesuit started off strong, winning the first 2 sets and only dropping the third, leading them to winning in 4 sets.
Men’s cross country went for gold, as well, and came out victorious. Having an amazing season this year winning the state title and placing second at the regional meet.
Women’s cross country went to Eugene for state and placed 6th overall.
Football’s season is not over yet. Jesuit football is headed off to Eugene this Friday for the Columbia cup semi final.
