Jesuit’s choir had five people make All-State in their respective groups out of hundreds of applicants.
Ms. Caldwell Gave more insight on what you need to make it and how hard it is to make All-State in choir.
“Qualifications are really just that you have a strong ear, so you’re able to really hear how to sing the pitches inside of a scale, and then how to sight read the music. So being musically literate and then having a beautiful, well trained voice, which usually amounts to some years in choir, nice, awesome.”
She also emphasized how difficult it is to make it.
“It’s quite difficult. It is a Blind Audition that hundreds and hundreds of high schoolers from around the state of Oregon submit into a like a digital bank of auditions, and then there’s judges from other states who listen to every single audition and then select out the best voices to make up the all state, the Oregon all state choir for the year.”
This year is special because it has a lot of students at Jesuit getting recognized for the respective groups.
“I’m really proud. Jesuit has never missed a year of sending at least one singer to all states, which I’m really proud of. But this year, we had five, and even one freshman made it. So these are ninth through 12th graders that are auditioning. But because it’s all state, just like any kind of Varsity or high honor, usually it’s the older students who have had more years of practice that make it”.
Junior Aaron Perera ‘26 was very happy to hear about how many of their choir members got selected to all state.
“I am impressed by everyone that made it, all state is something that is a great achievement and I am proud of everyone that made it, but also the people that didn’t make it but tried as well.
“For me, I put a lot of work into going to nationals. My voice teacher helped me a lot by preparing a solo that I could use for my audition, and also helped with my tone quality”.
If you want to see these students perform, they will be playing at First United Methodist Church in Eugene Oregon on January 19th.
