Ecological: Relating to or concerned with the relation of living organisms to one another and to their physical surroundings.
The main goal of Jesuit’s ecological club, Green Team, is to spread awareness about sustainable practices in Jesuit’ community and beyond.
Green Team takes part in helping the school recycle, even items that can’t be curbside recycled such as contact lenses, toothbrushes, toothpaste bottles, etc. Green Team has also helped with Jesuit’s food waste, making separate waste collections to make it easier for students to compost and recycle.
Green Team’s theme this year is conscious consumption: being aware and mindful of purchases and waste build up.
They hope to “educate students about the power in their purchases and policies of large, popular corporations,” Ms. Kuenz, the Director of Ecological Justice at Jesuit, said.
Annie Duan, a senior leader of the Green Team, helped explain Conscious Consumption and Green Team’s goal for the year.
Duan emphasized that it’s important to be educated on consumption habits. For example, being aware of where to shop, how to shop, and asking the reason behind what you bought is an important step in changing your own consumption habits?
The team is “looking into how we can sort of transform the decision making processes of a lot of students,” Duan said.
Green Team has started their goals for the year by creating presentations to get involved in other student clubs and affinity groups.
Aside from Conscious Consumption, the Green Team has discussed putting a dishwasher in the kitchen area to replace plastic utensils for silverware to make Jesuit’s plastic consumption decrease.
“[We] want to continue to advocate for metal and reusable utensils in our cafeteria,” Kuenz said.
Because the Green Team is still warming up to the new school season they are especially encouraging participation from new members.
