The most recent episode of Walk the Block featured junior Maraki Melles, the leader of Sisters in Strength, a new club at Jesuit. During her interview, Melles shared the inspiration behind starting the club, its mission, and how it has grown since its inception.
“The club focuses on empowering women in the community and serves as a safe space for people to connect and support one another,“ Melles said
Sisters in Strength is designed to bring together individuals who are passionate about personal growth and collective empowerment. The club meets once a month, and its activities include arts and crafts projects, group discussions, and lessons taught by the club leaders that help members build confidence and learn practical skills for empowerment. These sessions also offer opportunities for members to share their experiences, exchange ideas, and form meaningful friendships.
“We do fun crafts for women in our community or we will have lessons and learn how to empower the women in our community today,” Melles said
In addition to these activities, the club aims to inspire leadership and advocacy. By focusing on the importance of community and collaboration, Sisters in Strength encourages members to take initiative in their own lives and positively influence the lives of others.
Looking ahead, Melles hopes to expand the club’s reach by partnering with other organizations and hosting events that promote empowerment on a larger scale.
Sisters in Strength continues to grow, providing a space for connection and empowerment. For students interested in joining, the club welcomes new members at its next monthly meeting.
