Jesuit High School is making a big change to its long-standing tradition of the Student vs. Staff game. This year, the annual basketball showdown will be replaced with a volleyball match, a decision driven by safety concerns and the physical challenges the basketball game posed for staff members.
According to Mrs. Lakey, a teacher broke a few ribs during last year’s game, which led to discussions by the school leadership team about how to make the event safer and more accessible for everyone involved.
The school leadership team decided that volleyball, a sport with less physical contact, would be a better fit. The change allows more teachers to participate in the event, something that was increasingly difficult with basketball due to the sport's fast pace and physical demands. The new format is expected to be safer while still keeping the excitement and competitive spirit of the annual tradition alive.
Some students, like senior student government member Jack Goldstein, were disappointed by the decision.
“It’s the end of a long standing tradition, and although change can be good [I think] if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.”
Many students are still excited about the opportunity to face off against their teachers in a new way.
“Although I’m a little bit held back, I’m excited for an opportunity to have fun with my teachers,” said junior student government member Jason Pham.
The change is also generating excitement among the staff.
“I’m really excited to see new faces for students and teachers to play that haven’t played in the past,” said Activities Director Mrs. Lakey.
The first-ever Student vs. Staff volleyball game will take place during Flex on February 27.
