On Monday, April 21, the #1 Jesuit Crusaders narrowly lost to the #2 Grant Generals 8-7 at Cronin in women’s lacrosse in a tight game. Jesuit came into the game off of a great start to the season being 5-0-0. The Grant Generals posed a threat coming into the game 8-1-0 with captain and Northwestern commit Kate Ratanaproeksa leading the offense.
Gigi Abernethy ‘25 came off the starting whistle strong scoring in the first minute and off a pass from Meg Flanagan ‘27.
After a long possession Grant followed and scored two more, tying up the game before the end of the first quarter.
Grant scored two more in the second quarter. Following up, Quinny Handley ‘25 drove down the field to find Izzy Tamerlano ‘27 for a goal before half.
Jesuit came out strong in the third quarter, Abernathy found Hazel Mackey ‘26 in the fourth minute and Tamerlano added another in the 7th minute.
Grant followed with a goal in the 10th minute. Following up, Mackey passed it off to Handley in the 11th minute.
To finish the quarter with 4 seconds left, Flanagan found Tamerlano who returned it to Flanagan for a great team goal.
Grant’s Kate Ratanaproeksa found her stride in the fourth quarter. She scored in the first 8 seconds. She found another in the 6th minute with an 8 meter free shot.
The game was tied at the very end with Jesuit in possession, however Grant got a fast transition at the very end off of a missed shot. With 2 seconds left, Kate Ratanaproeska found the back of the net to win the game.
Senior captain Taylor Stalick ‘25 saw their loss as a good learning opportunity.
“We can regroup and refocus and learn the basic things that we need to learn. We can go into practice with a chip on our shoulders and go into all of our games super hard,” said Stalick.
Sophomore Izzy Tamerlano contributed with two important goals and an assist. She sees this game as a motivator for playoffs.
“Even though the game didn’t go the way we wanted tonight, I think this is a good opportunity for us to grow in the future and hopefully help us in playoffs,” said Tamerlano.
Sophomore Claire Comstock also played an important role in the game.
“We fought hard and played until the last whistle, it's an unfortunate loss but we will come back better and we will continue to grow stronger.”
