On April 26th, the Jesuit women’s lacrosse team is traveling up north to Seattle, Washington to take on Mercer Island at 1:00 in the afternoon.
Last year, Jesuit played against Mercer Island at the beginning of their season and unfortunately lost by 1 point, so this upcoming game is going to be a very entertaining and intense game.
Senior and captain Gigi Abernethy said her and the team are ready for anything that Mercer Island has to offer.
”After our loss to Grant, we realized all the things we need to work on, so we can be better for those tougher games, like Mercer Island, and to prepare us for playoffs.”
The Crusaders have had a solid season with winning every game besides one against Grant, while Mercer Island has lost one, tied one, and won the rest.
The Mercer Island and Jesuit women’s lacrosse teams are both 2024 state championships for Washington and Oregon. Overall, Mercer Island has won 4 state championships for Washington and Jesuit have won 4 consecutive state titles, but the overall number of state championships for the Crusaders is not known exactly.
After last year's loss against Mercer Island, the girls are taking their preparation very seriously. Senior Quinny Handley is expecting for her and the girls to give it their all, and highest amounts of energy.
”Last year we lost to Mercer Island directly after facing a hard match against Seattle Prep. We were battling with injuries and fatigue. Coming off a loss to Grant earlier this week, we are playing with a lot of anger and want to prove ourselves again.”
Mercer Island’s star player, Chelsea Choe, is a Denver commit for lacrosse. Choe is a midfielder, who also takes the draw for Mercer Island snails. The crusaders' player, Gigi Abernethy, is a midfielder who also takes the draw, so Abernethy has been studying and understanding Choe’s way of play and strategies around the ball.
Jesuit senior and goalie, Evie Hester is confident in the team's determination and drive to win.
“I think it will go well. We’ve been working hard in practice lately and I think everything will come together. We've been working to bounce back from the game against Grant and we’ve been using that as motivation to get better so we’re excited to showcase our skill against Mercer Island.”
