On Thursday May 15th, #1 ranked Jesuit Crusaders defeated #8 Wilsonville Wildcats in the quarterfinals of the OGLA championship. The Crusaders entered the game with only one loss to Grant earlier in the season.
Wilsonville kicked off the game with a goal in the third minute. However, Georgia Daskalos ‘25 returned with 2 goals quickly after. Gigi Abernethy ‘25 scored another goal for the Crusaders in the 9th minute and Daskalos finished the quarter with her third from a 6 meter shot.
Quinny Handley ‘25 found her stride in the 2nd quarter scoring 2 goals. Wilsonville also found the back of the net in the 8th minute.
Handley started off the second half with a goal in the 2nd minute, Abernethy following for another soon after.
Daskalos and Handley were connecting well with a goal by Handley and assisted by Daskalos and another soon after assisted by Daskalos and finished by Handley. Daskalos attributes the team to her scoring success.
“The team chemistry helps. There’s no selfish play so I think that is important to what makes us what we are. A lot of the open passes in the middle we’re comfortable giving it to each other so I think that really helps us get points,” said Daskalos.
Wilsonville gained some momentum and found the back of the net in the 5th and 8th minute of the third. Mayci McDonald ‘25 drove and found Abernethy to finish the third quarter.
The fourth quarter was low-scoring with Hazel Mackey ‘26 and Handley scoring in the last 2 minutes.
Daskalos and Handley led the team in scoring, each with 5 goals. Handley thought the defense played a big role in their success.
“I thought the team dominated on the draw circle, defense, and clears. We can always continue working on our offensive movement and shot placement” said Handley.
The team is proud of their quarterfinal performance and anticipating the semifinal game.
"It was a big win for us, and I’m really proud of how the team battled through everything. It was a tough game, a lot of calls didn’t go our way, and we were getting hit hard, but everyone just kept pushing. I think the team showed a lot of heart and stayed together through the chaos. From my perspective, we did a great job staying focused and trusting each other. There’s always stuff to clean up, maybe just tightening up our execution and communication, but I’m learning a lot from the older girls and just trying to do my part to help us keep moving forward in the playoffs," said Claire Comstock ‘27.
“We are feeling very excited going into the rest of playoffs. We are ready to compete and work hard as a team,” said Handley.
Jesuit advances to play OES in the semifinal match on Monday, May 19th at 8:00 PM.
