The Art Show is an amazing opportunity for the AP Art students to showcase their AP portfolios.
The Art Show is usually at the end of April, but this year, due to the AP deadline being on May 9th, the Art Show is being held on May 21st, according to Mrs. Sascha Newell, the AP Art teacher who has been planning the Art Show for around 15 years.
The AP portfolios are the star of the final Art Show of the year, a change from previous years.
“This is our first year where we have students who have intentionally put together a full portfolio for the College Board, and have submitted their work to be scored by the College Board,” Newell said.
Senior Kate Link describes the difference between how this year’s AP Art has been different due to the AP portfolio.
“We get to have a bigger portfolio and more of a personalized question that we’ve explored throughout the year. Mrs. Newell really helped us to explore that inquiry that we had, and because of that, all of our artwork is very different from each other, and we don’t have many constraints on what mediums we used or what sizes, so everything’s very unique and diverse,” Link said.
Link’s own inquiry was based on self image and she’s used her creativity to display her life.
“My inquiry for AP art was self image based. So it was how the snapshots of my life reflect and distort the whole me. I started off with pictures from my childhood, and I did more photorealistic things, and then as I grew, I tried to represent the mindsets that I have when I’m cramming for tests, how I feel when I’m around my friends, and kind of more photography based things. It’s just an experience of exploring as you go, and changing mediums. So I’ve used watercolor, colored pencils, graphite, acrylics, I’ve layered paper, I’ve done scrapbook type things, I’ve explored all sorts of mediums,” Link said.
The AP portfolios have led to impressive art that showcases the mastery the AP students have achieved over their years at Jesuit.
“Now we’re really seeing the whole big shebang at the end of a firework show, where it all goes off. That’s the level at which we’re looking at their artwork, that this is the best of their best work of those four years,” Newell said.
Senior Simon Ames is excited to be able to share his hard work with the Jesuit community.
“I think it’s nice that we have a chance to show the work that we’ve been doing this whole year for our AP portfolios, especially as it’s culminating our journey throughout our four years at Jesuit,” Ames said.
Link has been involved with the Art Show since her freshman year, and has loved having the opportunity to see the art displayed.
“One of my favorite parts is seeing what Art IV is doing. The art classes don’t get to interact as much, and seeing the processes they’ve gone through has been really interesting. Also, as a younger student, it’s cool to see what you’re going to be doing when you’re a senior, or even seeing the junior’s work and what you’re going to be doing then,” Link said.
The Art Show is a great way to see what Jesuit art students have been doing this year and how much work they have put in for their AP portfolios.
