Every October, Filipino American History month recognizes the history, achievements, and contributions of Filipino Americans in the United States. This month is celebrated because on October 18, 1587, the first Filipinos arrived in California.
At Jesuit, the Filipino Culture Club is honoring the month with events centered on the theme “parangalan,” a Tagalog word that means “to honor”.
Club leaders Elissa Paez and Mark Costales say they want to celebrate present traditions while also remembering the history and sacrifices of their ancestors.
”Filipino Americans were the first Asian Americans and are the third largest Asian American group today,” senior leader Elissa Paez said. “It’s super important to recognize how we got here and how our ancestors paved the way for us.”
This month, the club is hosting a Lumpia rolling event on October 16th, where students can make the popular Filipino dish together. They will also compete in ASU’s Rice Off later in the month. At each meeting, leaders provide short history lessons to connect the activity with its origins.
“We want to put a focus on honoring the efforts, contributions, and history of our ancestors,” Paez said. “For example, during our lumpia meeting, we’ll teach about the origin of the dish.”
Senior leader Costales emphasized that the club is open to everyone, not just Filipino students:
”Students of all backgrounds are welcome. We encourage everyone to join, learn, and experience Filipino culture firsthand,” he said. “Without historical context, traditions lose their meaning. That’s why we share their significance at every meeting.”
Outside of October, the club is also known for its lively tinkling performances at Jesuit’s Community Celebration Assembly, which have become a fan favorite.
“The tinkling shows the creativity and joy of the Filipino people,” Ellie Keppinger said. “Performing it made me proud to share something uniquely Filipino.”
Through food, dance, and history, the Filipino Culture Club continues to honor its heritage while building community at Jesuit.
