The Jesuit women’s soccer team faced West Salem in the second round of the State Championship playoffs. West Salem came into this game with a 7-7-1 record, being ranked 16th. The 15-0-1 number 1-ranked Crusaders cruised by the Titans with a 5-0 win.
The conditions were not the best for the Crusaders or Titans but Jesuit stepped up and overcame the adversity.
“We put the weather aside, we played for each other, family,” said sophomore defender Ellie Covington.
The first goal came from sophomore Estelle Lee in the 11th minute assisted by Jo Frischknecht.
Sophomore forward Estelle Lee knew this would be a tough game but she had confidence in her team’s fight.
“Nobody outworks us.”
Jo Frischknecht made the score 2-0 from an assist from Estelle Lee in the 20th minute.
After only 8 minutes, Vega Arancibia put a ball in the back of the net in the 28th minute after a pass from Natalie Webber.
Although the Crusaders had a lead, sophomore forward Aaliyah Johnson knew they couldn’t get ahead of themselves.
“Calm is contagious,” Johnson said.
Sophomore Eva Hairston had herself a pair of goals, both of which were in the second half. With one being a solo isolation in the 73rd minute.
With the bad weather, there were loyal fans who showed up and cheered for our Crusaders. Mrs. Kent watched the girls play and was satisfied with how they did.
“A lot of offsides subjective to say the least, the opponents packed it in to keep us from shooting, with 2-3 people on Natalie Webber, we fought through it, we are gonna see that, that’s the tactic to keep us from scoring.”
The Jesuit Crusaders are hosting the Sheldon Irish on November 8th on Cronin Field. A win in that game will advance them to the semifinal on the 11th which will also be hosted at Jesuit.
