This year’s fall play Rumors differed from Jesuit’s norm in one way: a sophomore, Nuala Bastable, helped direct it.
Bastable, who first started acting in third grade, became an avid member of Jesuit’s theater department freshman year. Her talents in singing, dancing, and acting helped her to earn many key roles.
But this September, a new challenge came her way.
During the audition process for Rumors, she realized acting in this play wasn’t for her.
“The director and I decided that I might be better suited for a different role in the production,” Bastable said.
Director Brandon McCoy offered Bastable the opportunity to be an assistant director. She worked with the cast on acting, memorizing lines, and understanding their characters. Also, her role involved helping McCoy with staging and blocking.
While Bastable prepared to take on the new challenges, she worried about how it might affect her bond with the actors.
She said, “Being a sophomore in a leadership role worried me because I didn’t want my upperclassmen friends feeling uncomfortable while I gave them notes.”
Despite her worries, she found success throughout her directing journey.
Junior Charlotte Gaston said that “Nuala was amazing at giving insightful and respectful feedback that really helped.”
Now, Bastable stars in the upcoming musical A Chorus Line and credits her directing experience for her improved assurance.
“It really allowed me to be sure that everyone wants me to succeed. I am able to more confidently understand feedback,” Bastable explained.
Whether it’s giving notes or receiving them, Bastable plans to take on all upcoming roles and continue to improve as an actor and director.
