Juniors have just recently acquired off campus lunch here at Jesuit, a policy usually reserved for just seniors. However, this new privilege is limited to walking distance from Jesuit, unlike seniors who can drive.
Last week, the junior class had a class meeting to discuss the rules and guidelines for the new off campus lunch time. In order to go off campus, juniors needed their parents to sign a form and then get a sticker for their school ID. Only students who had attendance issues and a low GPA were not allowed to get their sticker.
“I was a little more surprised how many students were like, so if I bring my grades up, so if I am on time for the next two weeks to school or something like that, can I get my junior privileges? So trying to always create a path for students, it seemed to be a motivation to divide kind of the goals of the school,” Vice Principal Mr. DeKlotz said.
The student government proposed this idea for the first time last year and the faculty approved it. The current seniors did really well with it allowing the opportunity for the current juniors to get the same experience.
“I think they’re doing a good job so far,” said vice principal, Mr. DeKlotz.
Most juniors seem to be really enjoying their new privileges and have been making the most of the new off campus lunch time with trips to Starbucks, Pizza Schmizza, and even Chipotle.
“I have liked how you get a break from school and the feelings of school. It’s really nice to talk with friends and walk around and get food from other places because the food from here can get really repetitive,” junior Hannah Bromert said.
Students have mentioned how much they like having some time off campus during the day to take a break from school and get away from all the feelings that may come with school.
“I really like having a break in the school day to recharge. It’s a nice change in scenery too,” Page Cunningham said.
Although the majority of juniors have been loving the new off campus privileges, some students have yet to go off campus for various reasons like time or getting their sticker.
“Its easier to just stay in the lunch room and eat with my friends because I pack my own lunch,” said Maeve O’Scannlain.
Jeffery Peters is another junior who has not gone off campus yet.
“I haven’t gone off campus yet because it’s been really hard for me to get my sticker. I qualify for all the things, just haven’t been able to get it,” he said.
Overall, students have been doing a really good job respecting the rules and there have only been a few minor incidents.
“There’s been a couple minor things in regard to maybe some juniors coming back from class late. So those were more very individual. I don’t think we wanted to pull it from all juniors based on just a couple people so but overall, I think juniors have been good and respectful of it, and like 99% of them on back, on time to class and things, no significant concerns” DeKlotz says.
If juniors continue to comply with the rules, they will maintain off campus privileges through the end of the year.
