The #12 ranked Jesuit Crusaders opened the doors to the #20 Westview Wildcats for a huge Metro League matchup. It was also a big night for the Crusaders as they celebrated three seniors, Evelyn Tossi, Toviah Smith, and Kendra Hicks in their final home game of the regular season.
The Jesuit offense started off to a slow start in the first few minutes of the game. Then, sophomore guard Sophia Costarella, and seniors, Smith and Hicks started hitting shots for the Crusaders.
“We have previously played this team before, so we knew we had to come out strong because they were ready to fight,” Costarella said.
The Crusaders finished the 1st quarter with an 18-10 lead. Hicks was dominant throughout the game on both sides of the ball.
As the second quarter began, it just kept getting better and better for Jesuit. Guards Audrey Bayless and Sophia Costarella controlled the tempo for the Crusaders throughout the quarter, dishing the ball to Hicks and also hitting big shots for the team.
Sophomore guard Amani Lubrano caught on fire hitting multiple threes for the Crusaders heading into halftime. The Crusaders were just playing all around selfless basketball. Bayless hit a big time three for Jesuit to send the Crusaders into halftime up 37-21.
The third quarter began and the Crusaders picked up right where they left off with Hicks dominating the boards and the Crusaders pushing transition. A few hustle plays from the Crusaders led to more threes from Bayless and Lubrano.
The Wildcats were doing everything they could to get back into this game, hitting a few shots here and there, but also making hustle plays for their team. But at this time there was no stopping Hicks. Jesuit closed out the third quarter up 55-30.
The Crusaders continued to play their brand of basketball to finish out this League matchup. Hicks ended with a career game, finishing with 33 points and 25 rebounds. Jesuit took home the win 68-37 to move them to 17-6 on the year.
“We were really pleased with the final score, and it gives us a lot of motivation going into our last Metro League game,” Costarella said.
