As women’s basketball is starting league play this week, freshman Sam Harris has taken a crucial role on the team.
Freshman Sam Harris has taken the role of being the starting point guard for the Crusaders this year. While being on the major watch list for colleges on the prep girls hoops, she has risen to the expectations of proving her skills on the court.
Amani Lubrano, senior captain, said “she is a very unselfish player who has contributed to our offense a lot this season.”
Harris’s court vision allows her to create opportunities not just for herself, but also for her teammates. As the primary ball-handler, she is consistently making hard passes, and finding open teammates. Harris pushes the tempo of the game in transition.
Being one of the youngest girls on the team, Harris’s role can come with pressure.
But, Harris says “as the season has gone on, all the players are so supportive of each other, so I don’t feel as much pressure.”.
The support from the team has an impact on how Harris stays confident in the game.
Harris says, “Tthe way I stay confident when I make mistakes is just knowing that my teammates have my back,” Harris said.
Not only does While Harris brings energy on the court, Lubrano says “Sam is a light and spirited person outside the court”.
As league play continues, Harris’s role will likely grow. With her court vision and trust in her teammates, the freshman point guard has already made an impact on the Crusaders. The progress she has had this season is a representation of how she will shape the future of the women’s varsity basketball team.
