After joining Jesuit High School in August of 1991, AP Comparative Government and Politics( AP Comp GoPo) and AP US Government teacher, Jerry Hahn announced that he would be retiring at the end of the 2025-26 school year, concluding a 35- year career at Jesuit.
During his time at Jesuit, Mr. Hahn taught 13 different classes. In his early years, he taught Freshman English and Speech, student government, and was a vice principal for student services. Eventually, he moved to the history department, where he taught Freshman History, US History, Government, Economics, Modern American Survey, AP Comp GoPo, AP US Government, International Studies, and Post-WWII European History.
“I also filled in for a semester as a PE teacher, and had a position titled faculty technology integration facilitator,” Hahn shared.
Not only did Mr. Hahn impact the student body in class, but outside of the classroom as well. He coached freshman basketball for 30 seasons, football for 30 seasons, baseball for 7 seasons, track and field for 3 seasons, and men’s soccer for 1 season. He even stepped up to coach JV men’s golf for a tournament.
Men’s basketball senior, Ryan Barone, who not only has Mr. Hahn as a teacher this year, but also had him as his first Jesuit basketball coach, shared how much he learned from him.
“Freshman year he transformed me, not just as a player, but into a disciplined student as well,” Barone said.
Reflecting on his time at Jesuit, Mr. Hahn wants nothing more than to have left a positive impact on those he encountered.
“I hope to have made a positive impact on the students and athletes with whom I have crossed paths,” Hahn said.
For period 4 Comp GoPo, students Noah Khan, and Zola Zuccolo, Mr. Hahn he did just that.
“Mr. Hahn brings so much joy into the classroom through his passion and shows immense care for his students which helps build up the Jesuit community,” Zuccolo shared.
“He made coming to class something I look forward to doing, it’s become a highlight of my day. He always asks how we are doing in other classes and in sports and I can tell how much he cares about me and the other students,” Khan said.
While he had many interactions in his years at Jesuit, he mentioned his co-workers are people he’ll never forget.
“A highlight has been my colleagues and friends I have had on faculty, staff, and the administration,” Hahn acknowledged.
His coaching years and travel year was also something he highlighted in reflection of his time at Jesuit.
“Some favorite highlights were also our 1st state basketball championship in 1999, and winning the state football championship on my 40th birthday in 2000. My year as a Fulbright Scholar Exchange Teacher in Germany in 2006-07 was also very special,” Hahn mentioned.
After the school year ends, Mr. Hahn plans on moving to warm and sunny Arizona where he plans on traveling, seeing friends, and enjoying carefree days.
