Monday, May 18, the Jesuit women’s lacrosse team defeated the Hood River Eagles 14-2. The win advanced them to the state championship for the sixth year in a row.
Junior Claire Comstock said, “I think the team is really excited for this opportunity and confident because of all the work we’ve put in together this season. There’s definitely pressure that comes with a state championship game, but I think moments like this are what every athlete looks forward to. More than anything, I’m excited to compete alongside my teammates and give everything we have out there “
The Crusaders will face the Grant Generals, who beat the No. 3 seed West Linn in a thriller winning 11-10. The Crusaders have already played Grant and West Linn prior in the season, by beating Grant 16-15 in an overtime battle, and also beating West Linn 11-6. Both of these high level teams play with a lot of grit and tenacity, which has really given Jesuit a run for their money in their preseason and will pose a serious challenge for the Crusaders this Thursday.
The Generals run a fast and efficient offense, depending on junior Cornell commit Isla Hoffelt and sophomore phenom Myla Zawadzki. Both Hoffelt and Zawadzki have a combined total of 129 goals within the span of 18 games.
This impressive turnout by the Grant duo has given the Crusaders a big obstacle for them to overcome. Senior captain Lanie Knight said “ If we can shut them (Hoffelt and Zawadzki) down, I think we have a good shot at winning the game. They are Grant’s most dominant players, so the key to our success will be shutting them down”
Junior Hazel Mackey had a standout game against Hood River on Monday as she scored 3 goals. Mackey said, “if we can carry that energy we brought on Monday, then we have a good shot on Thursday”
Come support the Crusaders Thursday night as they fight for their sixth state title. The game starts at 7 p.m. and at Lakeridge and is going to be a huge matchup.
